When is swim lesson registration?
Answer: Please consult the current Recreation Program Brochure. Swim lesson registrations in the Fall, Winter and Spring are held on the first day of registration with most other programs. Swim lesson registration in the summer is held on a specific Saturday
If my child misses one or more classes, can they still pass to the next level?
Answer: Yes, as long as the child can demonstrate the required skills to pass the class.
Can missed classes be made up (can I just show up at another scheduled swim lesson)?
Answer: Only if the Recreation Department cancels a class, will there be a make-up. If a participant misses a class, there is no make-up. Participants can only attend their designated swim lesson time.
When do I need to bring my child’s birth certificate?
ANSWER: Participants who are register for Level 1 need to bring their child’s birth certificate to verify they are 5 years old.
Do you know if my child passed a particular level? Do you keep records?
ANSWER: Please ask the swim instructor at the pool if you’re child passed the class. The Recreation Department does not keep records of swim lesson results.
Are the pools opened during school vacation/holiday weekends? What’s the policy for pool closings? Where is the pool located?
ANSWER: The pools are closed when there is no school which would include closure during vacation and holiday weekends. The Main and IOH Pools are located at Manchester High School, 134 E Middle Tpke (use Brookfield Street entrance).
When are Summer Day Camp packets available?
ANSWER: Camp packets are available during the month of March at all recreation centers.
Recreation Leader in Training: does my son/daughter need to attend all weeks? By registering for RLT; does that mean I can automatically work for the Recreation Department?
ANSWER: No, each teen goes through the program and is given a midterm and final evaluation that will contribute to the decision during the hiring process.
What locations can I use a credit card? If I’m using a credit card, can I just register over the phone, or do I need to register in person if using a card?
ANSWER: You can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) at any office location. You can register over the phone if using a credit card. You can also use a credit card when registering online (click here).
How much is a facility pass, what’s included, when do you have to renew?
ANSWER: A facility pass is $50 for adults (21+) and FREE for anyone under the age of 21. Facility passes are for Manchester residents only and proof of residency is required at time of purchase.
Note: A resident is defined as someone who resides in Manchester. Passes are valid September 1 through August 31. The pass includes usage of the indoor pools, outdoor pools, Fitness Center and Drop In Gym at the Community Y Rec Center, Mahoney Rec Center, as well as the Bennet Leisure Center.
I’m in a adult swim exercise class, can I just use the pools to practice additional swimming without a facility pass?
ANSWER: No, you must have a facility pass during general/adult swim times.
Do I need to buy a facility pass in order to register for a recreation program?
ANSWER: A facility pass has a separate fee. You do not have to purchase a facility pass in order to register for a recreation program.
When do I receive a phone call from a coach, when are practices, games?
ANSWER: Upon registering for a program, your registration receipt will contain information on the program. For additional information, contact the Recreation Division at 860-647-3084.
Where can I register for a Water Safety Instructor Class, CPR, First Aid & Safety, Lifeguard - and or - I don’t see that you are offering a specific class at this time; where can I find out if anyone else locally is offering a class? If my child misses a class or two will they still pass the W.S.I./Lifeguard class?
ANSWER: The Recreation Division offers classes at various intervals. Please consult the Program Brochure for current listings. You may also contact American Red Cross in Greater Hartford at 860-678-2801 for area listings. Missing classes may result in not passing, it is at the discretion of the instructor.
What’s the difference between registering for a lifeguard class or WSI?
ANSWER: Life guarding training is required for anyone who wants to be a lifeguard. Class training consists of Professional Rescue, First Aid, CPR training, Difibulator training, Fitness requirements, Course Test (note: if pass the course, does not guarantee a job).
W.S.I. - instructor techniques, teaching, learn skill level of 1-7 that you teach.
Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.) - (only take if want to teach swimming lessons (not a requirement of a Life guarding job).
I didn’t receive my refund, when was it processed, how long does it take to receive?
ANSWER: You must notify the main office before the start of the program to receive a refund. Please note that refund types are based on the method of payment used in the original transaction (i.e. if you paid with cash or check, a refund check will be issued, but if you paid with a credit card, then your refund will be put back on your credit card). It takes 2 to 4 weeks to process a refund check while refunds to credit cards should appear within a few days. After a program has started, refunds are typically only given for medical reasons, but this is up to the supervisor's discretion.
When is it decided if a class is canceled?
ANSWER: A decision is made within 1 day prior to the start of the class.
When will I receive the program brochure? Will it be mailed to my house, or will it be included as an insert in the newspaper? I didn’t receive a brochure and I live in Manchester - how are they mailed out? Can you put me on list to receive a brochure? How can I be sure to receive a copy next time?
ANSWER: The brochure is direct mailed 3 times per year in May for Summer programs, in September for Fall programs and in December for Winter & Spring programs.
When is open gym time/activity drop-in time at the Community Y Rec Center, Mahoney Rec Center, Nathan Hale Activity Center and Bennet Leisure Center? Can I just drop my child off, or do I have to stay with my child (what is the age requirement for my child to be dropped off)?
ANSWER: Open gym time varies depending on the season, please call 860-647-3084 for more information. The age requirement to be at a Recreation Center without an adult is 10 years of age.
How old do you have to be to use the fitness center at the Community Y Rec Center?
ANSWER: The age requirement is 16.
Where can I buy tap shoes?
ANSWER: Dance Village in Manchester off Spencer Street.
Do I need to bring a yoga mat to class?
ANSWER: Yoga mats are provided in most classes but students are encouraged to bring their own.
I registered for Session 1, does that mean I’m automatically registered for the next session?
ANSWER: No, registration is not automatic. Please consult the brochure for registration dates and times.
I recently took a CPR class, but haven’t received my certification card. When will I receive it?
ANSWER: You should receive your certification cards within 4-6 weeks.
Does the Recreation Division offer Competitive Swim in the winter?

Do you offer cheerleading?

I didn’t receive a call from the baseball coach?
ANSWER: The Manchester Recreation Division does not offer baseball. Please contact Little League and T-Ball 860-649-9975.
How old do you have to be to work for the Recreation Department?
ANSWER: 15 yrs old (in some cases 16).
When do you begin accepting applications?
ANSWER: Applications are accepted year round
What forms are required to complete the application process?
ANSWER: Seasonal application, resume, two written references, copy of drivers license OR copy of student ID, copy of social security card, health form, W4 State, W4 Federal, I-9 forms and copy of required certifications.
